Enjoy the Natural Hot Springs in Montemerano
Discover the fascinating city of Montemerano! Located in the heart of the Maremma, it is a beautiful 12th-century city enclosed by defensive walls. Spend a few quiet hours walking around its perimeter, exploring several old churches, and enjoying a typical local lunch. You are sure to love the natural thermal waterfalls and thermal springs… Enjoy an afternoon to relax your body and mind!
The Gorello waterfalls come from the sulfurous waters of the Terme di Saturnia, a nearby spa and hotel. Water flows from the natural source at a temperature of 37.5° C (98° F), and thanks to the presence of a particular element known as thermal plankton, it is thought to be beneficial for the skin as well as for the digestive, circulatory, and respiratory systems.
Montemerano is located on a hill surrounded by a forest of olive trees. The city flourished in the second half of the 10th century, when the residents of the province began to move inland to escape malaria and the endless barbarian invasions that plagued the coast. Montemerano was ruled by a democratic institution until 1272, when it fell into the hands of the Aldobrandeschi.
In the second half of the 13th century, it passed to the Basques, the feudal family that financed the expansion. At the end of the 14th century, the Sienese Republic forced the Basques to retreat. In 1556, it became part of the vast domain of the Medici, before the Hasburgo Lorena assigned Montemarano to the Municipality of Manciano, where it remains today.
