TOUR Description

Starting to see the mesmerizing town of Montemerano! Located in the heart of the Maremma, it is a beautiful 12th century town encased by defence walls. Spend a few peaceful hours walking around its perimeter exploring several old churches and building then taste a typical local lunch. The you’ll be fascinated by the natural thermal falls and its hot springs…Enjoy an afternoon to relax your body and your mind!

The Gorello Waterfalls originate from the sulphurous waters of the Terme di Saturnia, a nearby spa and hotel. The water flows from the natural spring at a temperature of 37.5°C (98°C) and thanks to the presence of a particular element, known as Thermal Plankton, it is thought to be good for the skin, as well as for the digestive, circulatory, motor and respiratory systems.

Montemerano sits on a hill surrounded by a forest of olive trees. The town flourished in the second half of the 10th century when the province’s residents began moving inland to escape malaria and the endless barbarian invasions that plagued the coastline. Montemerano was governed by a democratic institution until 1272, when it fell into the hands of the Aldobrandeschi. In the second half of the 13th century, it passed to the Baschi, the feudal family that funded its expansion. At the end of the 14th century, the Sienese Republic forced the Baschi to retreat. In 1556, it became part of the Medici’s vast rule, before the Hasburg Lorraine assigned Montemerano to the Municipality of Manciano, where it remains today.
